Groups allow you to communicate with a specific set of people in-world (and you can allow all the members of a group to edit objects you have built and other cool stuff like that).

Groups can be open - in which case anyone can join them; or restricted - in which case you have to be invited to join.

How do I join an open group

  • Go to the Edit menu and select Groups (the Edit menu is to the top left of the SL client window)
    • The Groups window will open
  • Click on the Search button
    • The Search window will open with the Groups tab selected
  • Type in part of the name of the group you want to join
    • A list of matching groups will appear
  • Click on the name of the group that you want to join
    • Info about the group will appear to the right of the window
  • Click on the Join button
    • A dialogue box will come up that tells you how much it costs to join the group and asks you to confirm that you want to join it
  • Click on the Join button
    • You will get a message saying you have been added to the group and the Groups window will appear
  • Click OK on the message and Close on the Groups window
    • You are now a member of that group

How do I join a restricted group

  • Go to the Edit menu and select Groups (the Edit menu is to the top left of the SL client window)
    • The Groups window will open
  • Click on the Search button
    • The Search window will open with the Groups tab selected
  • Type in part of the name of the group you want to join
    • A list of matching groups will appear
  • Click on the name of the group that you want to join
    • Info about the group will appear to the right of the window
  • Double click on the name of the owner of the group (which will be the one in BOLD)
    • The group owner's profile will appear
  • Click on the Instant Message... button in the group owner's profile window
    • An Instant Message window will appear
  • Type in a message (explaining that you want to join the group - remember to say which group it is, who you are and why you want to join) - see Second Life IM for more info on sending Instant Messages in-world
  • Wait for the group owner to send you an invitation to join the group
  • When the invitation to join the group comes click on the Join/OK button
    • You will get a message saying you have been added to the group and the Groups window will appear
  • Click OK on the message and Close on the Groups window
    • You are now a member of that group
