Second Life groups
Groups allow you to communicate with a specific set of people in-world (and you can allow all the members of a group to edit objects you have built and other cool stuff like that).
Groups can be open - in which case anyone can join them; or restricted - in which case you have to be invited to join.

How do I join an open group
- Go to the Edit menu and select Groups (the Edit menu is to the top left of the SL client window)
- The Groups window will open
- Click on the Search button
- The Search window will open with the Groups tab selected
- Type in part of the name of the group you want to join
- A list of matching groups will appear
- Click on the name of the group that you want to join
- Info about the group will appear to the right of the window
- Click on the Join button
- A dialogue box will come up that tells you how much it costs to join the group and asks you to confirm that you want to join it
- Click on the Join button
- You will get a message saying you have been added to the group and the Groups window will appear
- Click OK on the message and Close on the Groups window
- You are now a member of that group
How do I join a restricted group
- Go to the Edit menu and select Groups (the Edit menu is to the top left of the SL client window)
- The Groups window will open
- Click on the Search button
- The Search window will open with the Groups tab selected
- Type in part of the name of the group you want to join
- A list of matching groups will appear
- Click on the name of the group that you want to join
- Info about the group will appear to the right of the window
- Double click on the name of the owner of the group (which will be the one in BOLD)
- The group owner's profile will appear
- Click on the Instant Message... button in the group owner's profile window
- An Instant Message window will appear
- Type in a message (explaining that you want to join the group - remember to say which group it is, who you are and why you want to join) - see Second Life IM for more info on sending Instant Messages in-world
- Wait for the group owner to send you an invitation to join the group
- When the invitation to join the group comes click on the Join/OK button
- You will get a message saying you have been added to the group and the Groups window will appear
- Click OK on the message and Close on the Groups window
- You are now a member of that group
