Second Life IM
You can send an instant message (IM) to someone in-world even if they are offline - the message will be shown to them the next time they login. Some people also get an email telling them that they have been send an IM.
Sending an IM to one of your Friends
If someone is on your Friends list then the easiest way to IM them is to
- Click on the IM button (bottom left of your SL client window)
- A list of groups and people should appear
- Double click on the person that you want to send an IM to
- A new IM message window will appear
- Type your message and press return
- The message will be sent - if the person is offline then you get a message telling you that your message will be delivered when they next login
If you send an IM to a group it will only be seen by members of the group who are online at the time.
Sending an IM to someone who is not on your Friends list
If someone is not on your Friends list then the easiest way to IM them is to
- Click on the Search button (bottom middle of your SL client window)
- The Search window should open
- Click on the People tab (along the top of the Search window)
- They part of the person's name into the Find box
- Click on the Search button
- A list of matching names should appear
- Click on the name of the person you want to IM
- That person's profile should appear to the right of the Search window
- Click on the Instant Message... button at the bottom of their profile
- A new IM message window will appear
- Type your message and press return
- The message will be sent - if the person is offline then you get a message telling you that your message will be delivered when they next login
Sending an IM to a group that you belong to
If you don't belong to the group then join it (see How to join a group)
- Click on the IM icon on the bottom left of your SL client window
- Double click on the name of the group (you may have to scroll down to find it in the list)
