Game making
« on: April 21, 2007, 10:53:36 PM »
After having a discussion with Siobhan today, we decided that it would be interesting to have a session or something about making games.

To make these, we need:
* 2D/3D graphics artists (unless we're making something text-based or rogue-like, obviously)
* Storyline/narrative writers
* Programmers

Further, we could probably do with making a computer simulator (or even just an interpretter for some PL or other) so that we have it more like real games programming, which obviously doesn't use LSL...

What do you all think?

AHA! Yes, I would be interested in this.

I've had quite some experience in making games with actionscript (in Adobe Flash).  Hopefully it would not be too hard to adapt to LSL.

I postulate that we could tie this in with the physics strand somehow.

I'll happily contribute to this group if I can be of use.  I've worked as a software developer, programmed with DirectX and C++, Java applet games, advised on the use of AI in games, regularly beta test games (especially MMORGPs) and I'm also a member of the Gaming and Learning in Second Life group.

I'm also attending a conference on Tuesday (our very own Nanodave will also be there) titled 'Enhancing learning; virtual worlds, simulations and game based learning' and I'm sure the folks there would be very enthused to hear the SParkers were running a games interest group on Schome Park.

When I was about 11 I was endlessly planning computer games. I did the maps and everything, but always stopped before I had finished the design. It would be nice to be able to actually do something.

Well, we need to pick a time when everyone's happy with it, really. So, those of you who want to come, tell us when you can come, and we can time it so we get the most people possible. :)

I've added this to the Events page for Friday 27 April, and made a sign-up page.

Could somebody add more details?

we discussed some idea about how to make games and we sort of came up with the idea of an assault course like the one near reception only more skill and mentally based

we are now looking for idea for physical obstacles and mental based puzzles

And bear in mind the creation of these challenges can span many areas, building, scripting, and even the use of bots to pose puzzles .etc.

Also worth noting was the idea that different parts of the 'game' could be situated in different parts of the island.  You need to complete each stage to be given the code/pass to the next part.

For those who missed the event there's also a quick summary and a picture in the wiki: http://schome.open.ac.uk/wikiworks/index.php/Schome_Gamers
