Is there any way you can have more control over the boat than just arrow keys? It's really annoying that I can only do left/right etc.

Question everything, including this.

Hi Explo

what sort of control would you like, ideally? The control we have over the current boats is down to how they are scripted, perhaps one task for people interested in programming and scripting would be to write more responsive scripts?

Martin Le Voi has posted stuff about sailing in the Main Grid - you will find it if you go to the top level of the forum and then search for the word 'sail' (without the quotes).

Martin is someone we are planning to move over into Schome Park in the next batch of staff (probably in late April) and I have asked him to bring some boats with him. However, in the meantime you might ask him (via the forum) if he can share some scripts for us from some of the boats he has ....

Mark Cabaret

I missed this post earlier so sorry for the late reply. Anyway, I was hoping for some control of the sail, or just different speeds depending on your direction relative to the wind. It would be really good if the boats could go faster cross wind than down wind-it would add a lot more strategy to the races. I'm really not sure how you would do this though.

Hi all

article on sailing in SL: http://www.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2005/07/putting_the_win.html

so it looks like some boats can have more control features.

Explo - I'd say a good start would be to make a bullet point list of what you're looking for and then we see if any of the SParkers who are playing with scripting fancy a go at making it happen....

A question for all of you SParkers* (because I don't know the answer) - how does "wind" display itself in SL? I suppose this is similar to asking how gravity compares between SL and RL.. is it random, what's the minimum/maximum wind speed you've noticed, etc.

Mark Cabaret

* As in, I am sure the super- scripters on the support team could tell me but I don't want to hear the answer from them - far more interested in finding out if any of the SParkers have been exploring this :)

Martin Le Voi may be able to help - perhaps by posting an example of a script from a sailing boat in the Main Grid that responds to the wind (he has posted messages about this in the forum - a search might well reveal them ..)
