Schome Park Projects / Skinningrove Jetty
« on: May 06, 2008, 02:47:59 PM »

Students from Freebrough College will be in Schome on May 12th 10 am to build a life-like replica of the Skinningrove Jetty refurbished and complete with railings, benches and lighting.  This will be their first time in TSL so others are welcome to come along, say hi and maybe even assist.

The images here will hopefully give you an idea of what we hope to build.

The finished Jetty would be then transported to the Second Life main Grid (this has been checked with Linden Labs) It will be placed in a location on Sea Turtle Island which approximates the area of Skinningrove sufficiently for our purposes.

The purpose of this event is to promote the potential in refurbishing the real life Jetty. The community of Skinningrove would like to do this much as their close neighbours, Saltburn have done with their pier. Since the Jetty is directly on the Cleveland Way many visitors pas through regularly. Watch this movie
The opening of the Jetty will take place during the Saltburn Folk Festival 2008. To begin with some music performances and then opening ceremony by Ashok Kumar MP. Dr Kumar will preside over proceedings in the form of a look-alike avatar.
After this the Jetty will be open to the public and boat trips will take place. Unlike the real Jetty the virtual one and therefore the proposed refurbished one will have steps down to a landing spot close to the beach for small boats.
Also as part of the event we will have some specially composed Skinningrove songs sung by the children of Whitecliffe Primary School.

I thought it stood for "Save Our Souls"

Media (making) / Digital Arts Exhibition
« on: February 04, 2008, 08:08:23 PM »
I'm currently working with a school in RL to mount a digital arts exhibition. It will run at the end of March and the class have chose DREAMS (Hopes and Aspirations) as their theme.  There's scope for folks in Schome to get involved. The exhibition runs in a 14 metre intsallation called the OCTORAMA which we've run several times before - info here - The Octorama is an installation with 8 screens, 8 projectors and 8 speakers. You can see a visulalisation here  - allthough the Event is in RL we can investigate how we may be able to run it in TSL too.

Anyone intersted can submit images for the screens. We're looking for DREAMS - could be an aspiration you have (you can add text) or it could be something surreal from a dream. Screen grabs of Schome might make surreal images

For this exhibition we need to create images 720 X 576 pixels.

As you create your images you should use a naming convention that will make it easy to make the compilation for the final video. You should use a sequential number so the images will be in the order you want plus your own name and save the images in JPG format. Do not use spaces or capitals. Therefore my images would be named like this:

but of course your own SL name

Yes Peter - I facilitated that movie. It's an interesting mix of real people and SL lookalikes. Tommy and Barry are very much part of Skinningrove life - we're starting to create a real guided walk in the village and we're going to work with the local school to create the "virtual tour" online. The Skinningrovers want to build a SL visualisation of their Jetty and film it to show how it could look and maybe use it to help seek funds to regenerate it in RL.

I use Camstudio which is free for the PC.

I set it to record a section of the screen 640 pixels by 480 which gives loads of "off stage" space where characters can loiter waiting to make an entrance

The Titanic had an identical sister ship called the Olympic. The owner of The White Swan, in Alnwick, Northumberland had sailed on the Olympic many times and had a particular affection for the First Class Lounge. This inspired him to purchase the Lounge as a complete set at the auction when the Olymlic was broken up for scrap in 1935. He built a special room at the back of his Hotel to house it. This became the Olympic Suite which is close to being a representation of the Lounge as it looked when it was fitted within the ship.

There's lots of memorabilia and it's very atmostpheric. I have visited but unfortunately it was early days of digital photography and my pics are rubish.

I have another image somewhere that I wish I could find but such is the fate of digital assets. I was working with a kids theatre group on a musical based on the Titanic. The theatre owner had a relative who perished on the ship. She brought in a telegramone one day  that read:
Dear ......

Fear not, Albert safe. No lives lost. Titanic unsinkable.

how wrong they were. I saw some of Alberts belongings too.

OK - this is almost on topic (I'm new around here)

Did you know that there is a place in the UK where you can experience the interior of the Titanic and those famous ballroom steps. I'm not talking about a fairground attraction.

Thanks - keep me posted. I've got a lot to learn. I just bought a TP Camera and Motor Mouth for my adult SL Lot. I guess can learn a lot here and take it back to the adult world

Media (making) / Machinima - Please Enlighten Me
« on: January 29, 2008, 07:15:44 AM »
Hello - I'm new here. I'm very keen on producing Machinima and I've come here because I've been getting a great deal of interest in this from adults over in SL and I know that young people I work with will want to get involved. I

I've noticed discussion of "Film Path Cameras" which I had not heard of. I've checked this out and it looks very interesting. I've been using ScreenCam (free for PC) for capture and have learned lots of tricks with my AV to get shots. However it's sometimes hard to get smooth pans or zooms so a scripted thing like this would be cool.

So, please tell me the stuff you  know about making Machinima, the tools etc. I'll gladly be educated.

I'd post a URL for the website of my SL acting troupe but I'll wait till a moderator says that's OK - don't want to get kicked out the day I arrive

I am indeed in GMT and therefore an early morning person and obviously an ICTholic reaching for the laptop along with my first shot of caffeine :)

Introductions / Hello From Straad
« on: January 24, 2008, 06:49:15 AM »
Well, due to an introduction from a friend of a friend of a friend, here I am : on yet another adventure.

I am Community Media Coordinator with The Institute of Digital Innovation, University of Teesside. My work is with community groups of all shapes sizes and ages much of which can be seen a

Generally, it seems I'm facilitating people to tell their stories through digital media and ICT. I stumbled on SL only a short while ago and it's  rapidly become one of the tools in my story telling box of tricks in the shape of Machinima I facilitate a lot of animation in my work and I was aware that some of the younger people I work with would wish to get involved in this different method of animation hence my interest in TSL

I'm trying to keep the balance right with plenty of RL, for instance I'm at a school today where we're working on a multi media exhibition. - There is no element of of SL in this other than the fact I've knocked up a visualisation of the Octorama installation in SL. As the kids can't visit this I'm off shortly to shoot a movie (unpopulated machinima?) that I can show them later today.
