Could you publish the script of your timer please or give me a copy inworld. I was speaking today to someone who is developing a workshop for Physics teachers - and he told me he couldn't find a good timer for this kind of experiment. So, with your permission, I could pass your script on to him, and then he will start teaching it to Physics teachers!

He also wanted to develop a HUD that would plot a distance/time graph as someone drives a vehicle around a race track.

Sorry you're having computer problems and might not be able to join us tomorrow. I can post an edited version of the lecture here and someone (maybe even me) will post the discussion.

Physics / TRUTHS Lecture
« on: April 15, 2007, 08:08:54 AM »
We have over 5 people signed up now, but reading the times suggested the only weekday option is Wednesday when there is an update - so SL will be down until after 8pm. Its not sensible to schedule events then, so the only other option I can offer is Saturday or Sunday evening at 7pm.

Any comments or should we perhaps try 9pm on Wednesday?

Topic suggestion: Observing Climate TRUTHS from space. We could put on a lecture and answer questions about NPL's TRUTHS satellite (see Schome Wiki and that will improve our understanding of global warming. We might have a debate afterwards on global warming and what it might mean for us all in the future.

Physics / Physics Induction Sessions
« on: March 17, 2007, 07:48:06 PM »
Thanks to everyone who came to the Physics Induction Sessions this week. We NPL folk enjoyed them, and I hope you got some ideas from them.

We have several options planned for the physics club as it gets underway, depending on your interests. For example we could tour the physics exhibits with you - and discuss topics like nanotechnology, climate change (whether the sun is cooling for example). Have you seen Al Gore's film - An Inconvenient Truth? Would you like to discuss it? Would you like to learn about cosmic radiation, air travel and manned travel to Mars?

Since we're at the National Physical Laboratory - thats where we keep all the primary measurement standards, perhaps you'd like to learn how we're planning to change the SI system to be even more accurate? Where is the Kilogram and what does it look like? How does an atomic force microscope work and how is it possible to measure forces inside a molecule?

Anyway for those of you intending to come to the physics club we need to know whether you can make the lunchtime sessions next week or if we should reschedule to later in the afternoon. Let us know.

And we need to know if there are anymore of you out there who would like to join the Physics group, so we may reschedule an additional induction session for you.

Please answer in this thread or sign up directly for sessions in the Wiki.

Thanks for this. It seems to be borne out by the evidence as well: only 2 people have signed up for an induction session so far. I will change the sessions now to include evenings, but will keep lunchtime sessions unless there is absolutely no demand for them of course. 8)

SL has its own language laboratory. And it will use voice (almost exclusively) when it opens in around 6 months time. I will be demoing this as an example of a virtual business to the DTI and DfES next week.

- they will probably charge premium rates as they can connect students with top notch language teachers around the globe. Instead of reading phrasebooks like 'at the airport' you can visit one in SL and try to check in when a flight has been delayed indefinitely!

They have a lot of sets - among the best I've seen in SL for role play, including a 'Desparate Housewives' home. I'm not sure what role you are meant to play there. Suggestions on a postcard please .....

Did everyone note the publicity today around bringing some Davos interviews inworld?

Help with virtual worlds / Re: Bloggs inworld

As previously noted the pro version of the Bloghud enables you to post to any Blog - but the freebie only posts to the Bloghud site.

The Pro version is quite sophisticated (developed by an ex BBC guy) - for example you can apply tags etc and there are pre-defined categories. Take a look at what people are blogging at

The FlickR site for SL is called Snapzilla -  its very easy to use. Create an account at and link it to your avatar. Then send your images snapped inworld to and they get posted against your avatar name and the sim you snapped. You can do this inworld simply by taking a snapshot. The snapshot feature today is very sophisticated. You can use the 'focus' feature (ALT key) to adjust the camera angle just as you can inworld but it only affects the snapshot. So there's plenty of opportunity to frame the right shot. Give the photo/email a subject and a message and it will appear automatically as a blog posting at Snapzilla.
