Schome Park Events / presentation/ SPbeta TV studio
« on: February 03, 2008, 07:24:10 PM »
Hello all,
I am new to SP and  wanted to note to you all that i will be delivering a presentation/ workshop at the National Arts Learning Network (NALN) conference thisTuesday, Feb 5th between 1330-1430. the topic is on supporting the transition of students from FE into HE and part of that discussion is looking at the application of VLE within education, specificallly that of SL/ SP as a communication platform through which partners can share good practice due to SLs ability to accomodate a number of technologies/ formats. This links directly with my own research and development of an SL island as a support structure within my college. Any student/ staff going to binworld or have any events taking place on this day/ time? I was planning to go inworld at this time during this presentation and it would be great to see some form of interaction going on. Unfortunately my student/ school contacts have not come online yet so any help would be appreciated. In SP beta you will find a new TV studio which I will be running workshop in. It is set up like a really cheesy TV chat show from the 70s- you know red shag carpets, funky background. Etc. Have a look and maybe see you on Tuesday? Cheers.

Introductions / Re: hello

Here is an exerpt from my research application: Hope it clarifies my intentions.

Currently there is a large and varied use of VLEs within education. As such there exists a need for a conduit/ platform through which these varied forms of technologies can begin to share the results of respective projects to date and begin to narrow this communication gap. The purpose of this research is to investigate the virtual environment of Second Life and the potential in utilizing its ability to adapt to many forms of filing and applied technologies (Quicktime, PPT, PDF, Word, Bbd, etc) and create a host environment which staff and learners both internally and our external partners can communicate with one another and share good practice. This environment would host a number of events, workshops and other similar activities which would provide each and all with an alternative means of improving their own practice. Students would have access to portfolio advice, mock interviews, lectures, student support, assignments and extra curricular activities while staff would have the opportunity to share lesson plans, resource materials and bespoke CPDs while initiating communication with themselves and potential students. With the ever growing logistical problem of travel between sites through the Medway, Kent and the South East, this platform would be able to provide a means of individual staff and students being able to participate in the above within a shorter time frame. Prior to this staff and students would have to commit a large part of the day to not only attending similar events but travelling to them as well. Now they can meet at a pre-arranged times, receive a variety of information, training and guidance within that time while still at their respective school/ college and then simply leave the computer terminal and attend their next class. Staff and students would also be able to attend similar sessions after school hours within a secure environment which would be monitored by student ambassadors or learners who can access this platform from home during this off peak hours. As part of this research and development it is anticipated that the training currently being made available to staff and students for similar activities in the ‘real world’ would also include this additional training for these ‘virtual environments’ which are already in development.
