Hi, I'm Athena Schomer. Here's a little bit about me and my background:
I grew up living with my mom and my older brother, both musicians, so I’ve been around music and music theory all my life. I’m primarily a classical bassist, but I also love playing a variety of other instruments, especially the ukulele, baroque recorders, and the xylophone/marimba.
Though practicing and performing (and schoolwork) take up most of my time, I have a ton of other interests apart from the music world. When I’m not practicing the bass, I enjoy reading, juggling, going for walks, spending time in nature, doing rubik’s cubes and other puzzles, learning about math, hanging out with friends, watching old Saturday Night Live sketches…and doing any of the above with my brother, though he’s away at college (Cornell) during the year.
I’m also interested in community outreach. I love teaching other people, especially kids, about what I do, so I’ll always jump at an opportunity to put together children’s concerts at schools and children’s libraries. I’ve also been the president of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at my school for three years, since working to increase gay rights and visibility, while promoting peace and understanding within diverse youth communities, is extremely important to me.
Some of My Favorite Music (other than classical): Simon & Garfunkel, Steely Dan, Zappa, Edgar Meyer, Jake Shimabukuro and Lyle Ritz (ukulele players), Bobby Darin, Ella, George Hamilton Green's and Harry Breuer's novelty xylophone rags, Leroy Anderson, and any Stephen Sondheim
Some of My Favorite Literature: The Sirens of Titan, Slaughterhouse-Five, The Master and Margarita, The Great Gatsby, The Crying of Lot 49, A Confederacy of Dunces, Siddhartha, The Stranger, Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, Prufrock and Four Quartets (T.S. Eliot), Cat's Cradle, Brave New World, Hawthorne's short stories, Gulliver's Travels, Anna Karenina, Ethan Frome, and others
