The Schome Park Programme - Music
Contents
Description
The music sessions were organised and delivered by a staff member using instruments bought and ferried from the main grid. The instruments, cellos and flutes, are ‘worn’ by the users and their avatar is animated to make approximate actions of competent play. The real work is actioned using a HUD (Heads Up Device) that is worn in addition to the instrument. This provides a set of notes like a keyboard, visible only on the users screen, and left-clicking on the notes produces the sound. There is some skill necessary to do this with the right timing as there is a small delay from using the HUD to producing the note for all to hear, and a certain knack is needed to start and end notes as required. The staff member organising the sessions is a qualified music teacher and used a mixture of activities to explore the music making possibilities in-world, for example from working on playing Pachabel’s Canon in the round to much freer jamming sessions where the instruction might be simply ‘everybody stick to black notes only’. |
Evidence of Learning/ Benefits
Most participants enjoyed the sessions, with one staff participant commenting ‘This has really made me want to start playing again in the real world’. With at least 3 participants in each session there was small group learning, and each activity required participants to work together or to explore sounds together. There were a small number of Second Life skills involved in using the instruments – wearing the instrument and the HUD and managing use of the HUD to produce the required sounds.
Issues / Problems
Participation in the sessions was limited by the number of instruments available, and in the longer term it would be more practical for the community to create the instruments so that they can be shared freely. This was in fact part of the plan for the music stream but for personal reasons the staff member leading the stream had to leave the project. For the same reasons he was unable to participate fully in the forum and wiki aspect of the group communication, and the music sessions were not well publicised, attracting just one or two students and one staff member to each of the 5 sessions that took place. There was one practical issue with a student being unable to make the instrument work for him - this may have been a skills issue or a hardware/software configuration.
Key Lessons Learned
The small amount of activity resulting from the music stream was very positive and if viewed as a pilot it is encouraging for further work. The idea of an initial series of workshops where participants create their own instruments is exciting and would potentially enable a more exploratory use of creating music within the environment, removing the musical as well as the practical restrictions inherent in working with the limited number of main grid instruments.
NB. Contrary to what the history might indicate, the original version of this was written by Elsa. PeterT just cut and pasted it in here from the original wordprocessed version.
I watched the music lesson when it took place, and I'm afraid I don't agree with most of what is written in this 'case study'. I feel it is biased and misleading, and does not help us to understand what happened. Amba 06:32, 9 February 2009 (GMT)
That's helpful that you have a chatlog of one of the sessions, Amba. Would you be able to add quotes from it to make this report more representative? Or, maybe, report on aspects of your experience that weren't picked up in the chatlog? Fox, 12:20, 9 February 2009 (GMT)
Would it make sense to tie this section in with the two video reports on the Schome Philharmonic that were put together by Athena and Estella? I feel that their evidence relates to the 'Key Lessons Learned' section. I think we'd have to make it clear that the original music sessions were not treated as a Pilot - that Athena and Estella mostly had to work things out for themselves (though I'm pretty sure I remember hearing SParkers telling them about the earlier music sessions.)Fox, 12:17, 9 February 2009 (GMT)
The Schome Park Programme - Music
Chatlogs
Sorry I didn't capture the date on these but if I sent them in at the time we would have it somewhere. I only have the chatlogs for two of the sessions I was at and only for while I was there. I was trying to write a very simple capture of what happened just so that we have a record of it, but they weren't my sessions. I can see that one student had trouble getting the instrument to work so I have changed the 'all enjoyed the sessions' to 'most', which seems to be a fair representation. If we are talking about personal experience I'd be happy to add some more - it would be great to have Amba's perspective too. Elsa 09:29, 10 February 2009 (GMT)
