Things to cover
Welcome
- This is exciting stuff - so be enthusiastic!
- Outline 4 strands (archaeology, ethics and philosophy, physics, and research)
- Explain that we want them to be proactive - we want to support them in doing things that they want to do
- It's all very new - so we will all be making mistakes and learning together (we want to try things out and make mistakes cos we believe that is often the best way to learn)
- Remind them that we are collecting data to help us learn about the potential and pitfalls of using TSL (eg we will be logging in-world discussions that we have with them)
- Find out when the best times are for them to take part in in-world activities (lunchtime/after school/evenings)
- Ask them if they managed to find out who the dragon in the chair was (Schome Malone is the answer)
Context of project
Briefly mention schome (not school - not home - schome - the education system for the information age) - we
genuinely intend to develop a better education system - starting from a blank sheet of paper rather than being constrained by our current education system. To find out more go to the wiki MainPage (http://schome.open.ac.uk/wikiworks/index.php/Main_Page) and follow the link in the schome section of the Wiki sitemap (top of right hand column).
Acceptable use policy
This is very important - if students ignore the rules in the AUP (http://schome.open.ac.uk/wikiworks/index.php/SNP_acceptable_use_policy) then they will be kicked off the project.
Most of the stuff is common sense:
- Privacy - only ever use your avatar name for anything to do with this project and never share personal details that would allow someone to communicate with you other than via the schome community website or in-world (eg keep secret your mobile phone number, email address, where you live, the school you go to, your myspace details)
- Treat other people in the way you would like them to treat you
- If you feel uncomfortable about doing something (which is not the same as being nervous about whether you will succeed or not) then think carefully about whether you should be doing it or not
- If you notice something that you think is in breach of the AUP or just makes you feel uncomfortable then tell us (ie tell a member of staff in-world and email schome-sl-help@open.ac.uk)
Signing up to the AUP - break the guidelines and you are out!

More stuff to cover
SL skills
- Help option in the 'useful stuff' menu on the left of every wiki page.
- Using chat (inc History)
- Using IM
- Forcing daylight - it's much easier to explore in daylight.
- Changing appearance http://schome.open.ac.uk/wikiworks/index.php/Editing_your_appearance
- Walking - flying (use the ramps and learn as you do the tour of Schome Park)
- Looking at things (camera controls)
- Moving objects (use the ramps)
- Get them to sign up for the SParkers1 group
- What is this and how do they sign up for it? --Mgaved 11:08, 9 March 2007 (GMT)
- An in-world group called SParkers1 - Go to Edit>Groups and then search for SParkers1 PeterT 16:39, 9 March 2007 (GMT)
Tour of Schome Park
Explain that Schome Park is divided into areas:
- Reception, Plaza, formal meeting areas (all along one side of island)
- Ramps, DIY Photobooth, Platforms (along another side of island)
- Scho-op - freebie store
- Sandbox - where they can build things (but remember they must keep a copy in their inventory cos the sandbox will bet swept - and they should avoid leaving things lying around anywhere else on the island unless its part of an agreed project)
- Area for strand (Research area is on the first floor of the Scho-op)
The schome community website
Remind them that they also have access to the schome community website (http://www.schome.ac.uk/, wiki, forum - and SLog when it is released). The project index page is called schome-NAGTY (in the index page menu on the left of every wiki page). They can use these to:
- Find out how to do things in Schome Park
- Sign up for sessions (from strand pages)
- Ask for help (in forum)
- Bliki about their experiences (using the SLog which will be available shortly and/or their userpage)
Getting help
- Help option in the 'useful stuff' menu on left of every wiki page
