How to log in to Schome Park

These instructions apply to both Second Life and Teen Second Life.
Once you have installed the Second Life® viewer then you simply launch the program in the normal way for your computer.
You will be asked to enter your username (avatar name) and password. Then click 'Connect'.
The software will then check to see whether or not a new version of the Second Life viewer has been released. If a new version of the client is available then you will be asked if you want to download it. This can take a while as the download is of the full client (ie around 30Mb for the Windows version). You will need administrator privileges on your computer to install it once it has downloaded so, if you are using a shared computer at school or elsewhere, you will need to find someone who can authorise the installation. You may also usually opt not to download it.

Schome Park folk - the first time you go in to Schome Park
If you are a student on the Schome Park Project then the first time you log in you will discover that your avatar doesn't look remotely like you want it to - indeed you may be unhappy about the gender of your avatar! Problems logging into the Second Life virtual world
You may sometimes have problems logging onto Second Life or Teen Second Life®. There are several possible reasons for this:
Problem - Servers Busy
- Linden Lab's servers are busy. This can happen if lots of people are using the Second Life world at the same time. If the login seems to be taking ages, and then when you do get logged in, the Second Life environment and your clothes just won't render, then this may be your problem.
What to do about it
- Try closing the Second Life viewer and then trying again. You may need to do this several times.
Problem - Scheduled Outage
- Linden Lab sometimes take the world down for maintenance. Instead, they display a 'Help' message with a link to a website where you can check whether the grid is up.
What to do about it
- Follow the link to a website where you can check whether the grid is up and running.
Problem - Firewall
- You have the client software installed, the grid is up and running, but you have never been able to access the Second Life world.
What to do about it
- If you are using a computer that is at a school or a workplace, the problem may be with your local firewall. Check with your systems administrator to see if access to the Second Life world is permitted through the firewall. If it isn't, you may have to use a different computer to get online.
Problem - Accessing Schome Park
- Access to Schome Park is by invitation only so, if you are not part of the Schome Park Project, you will not be able to visit.
- If you should be able to access the island, but you can't get in, it may be because there are too many avatars on Schome Park already. There is a limit to how many avatars can be gathered in one place in the Second Life world at one time and we cannot change this. We try very hard to timetable events so that Schome Park is lively, but not overcrowded.
What to do about it:
- If you find you are denied access, let us know, and we will sort the timetabling out.
