Here is an example of how avatars in virtual worlds can increase a student's courage to experiment with something new.

I was at Online Educa Berlin two weeks ago, and went to an educational gaming session. In response to a question from me, all 5 developers/implementers in the panel emphasized how important the Role Playing nature of their games was important for the engagement of users (usually, but not always, children) as it encouraged them to imagine different scenarios ("think outside the box") and experiment with them at no perceived personal cost to themselves if it went pear-shaped. All the games were highly popular as a result: even ones with quite large technical limitations.
