Welcome Prime - are you intending to bring in students to Schome Park? Could you tell us a bit more about your interests etc - and what interested you about Schome Park in the first place?

I'm a maths teacher and have a few students interested, the first round of applications should have just hit the post office ......... NOW.
Many many many years ago i played second life for a little bit but found it a bit dull, so I'm looking forward to being involved in something with a bit more of a purpose, and help make the experience fun!  I've got a lot of forums to read over the next few days to bring myself up to speed and will be joining in any scripting sessions as it's an area i know little about.

In my spare time I play far too many games, both tabletop and computer games, and work on the schools virtual learning platform.  Occasionally i sleep, when there's time :)

And Kali, sorry, no funding from me directly, until i work out a way to win the lottery.  I assume we can't get the land space to model physics on a grand scale using siege catapults as a particle-collider unless there's more money coming in :P

I was reading a thread about mechanics lessons.  It would be great as we could 'see' forces, and overall acceleration etc.  the objects wouldn't have to move precisely (with connection speeds etc it might not be appropriate anyway).  Just introductions with equal and opposing forces modelled in 3d would be fantastic!

I'll do the number-crunching if someone can do the scripting (or better still teach me)

The equal and opposing forces would almost certainly not act as you expect. The physics engine is not renowned for its accuracy.

Cool. What level do you teach maths at? (KS3, GCSE, A level?)
I do A level maths, as well as physics. ;)


As for funding us, it was actualy Animus that suggested it. lol
But if you could win the lottery for us, that would be great :P

As Kathy said, objects tend to not move very realistically. The only thing that's actually modelled pretty realistically are perfect spheres (which *are* modelled as perfect spheres), whereas everything else is modelled as triangles, like most 3D objects. They therefore end up 'floating', as such, on top of each other (as the physics engine for triangles leaves a 5mm 'border' around everything)

I'm teaching GCSE, but have also tutored A level, which is far more fun.

It's a pity that the physics isn't up to scratch, but after a little construction practise yesterday I'm sure something could be bolted together.  While doing some brain storming I thought of physics and biology.  The software could be used to 'shrink people down' so they could see organs in use, or particles. (by this i mean just create giant set pieces)

Prime as in 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13 etc :) 

Sorry Kali, misread who was writing what.  Seriously though, a friend has been doing a study into the frequency of the national lottery balls selected, on the premise that the balls were not identical because of the varying amount of ink on them, so this might lead to bias.  Some people really do have too much free time ;)

Yep, that's what I meant by 'hence the name?' :P

Something makes me think that the weight differences due to different amounts of ink a) would be almost negligible relative to the weight of the balls in the first place, and b) the tolerances for the balls would be larger than said weight differences (after all, you generally can't make *perfectly* identical things, so things tend to have tolerances of up to a few percent)
