Time Explorers / Vibia's Silchester Diary
« on: July 21, 2008, 06:35:27 PM »
I had no internet access on site so I wrote a blog in my notebook. I thought some people may be interested.

Day 1
5.55pm
Had to get up at 6.45 this morning to leave for 7.30. I packed everything last night. Got here at about 9am and put the tent up. After that I went to see Amanda (Site director) and I was put in the SW corner of the trench. Whilst excavating my layer and then cleaning I found a bit of bone and a tile. But the tile as in the next layer down so could not be removed. It was thought to be part of the hearth nearby. Break was at 11 and lunch at 1. Food was *very* nice. It rained loads over luch so we had to wait for it to slow. I had to wear my rather fetching waterproofs. I then planned my area which took a while as it was rather confusing and we had to find the plans for the layers above and nearby. Then it had to be acturately measured, etc. Then we had to replan as we discovered there were imaginary points as well as the real ones. This all took until 5.30, end of the day. I am now sitting in my tent in the rain eating dolly mixtures and waiting for 7pm when I can eat.

10pm
Food at tea wasnt as good as the food at lunch but was ok. Am in my tent. Is raining quite a bit. Finished my dolly mixtures now and have nearly finished my white choc jazzies. Feel kinda sicky now. But I am reading Murder on the Orient Express which is good. I think nearly all the students have gone to the pub. It really quiet, all I can hear is the rain. Its really cold now as well. Think I will stick a jumper on.

Midnight (or just gone)
Stupid students. Just went to sleep and they come back from the pub and wake me up. They are making soo much noise. I hope they have really bad hangovers.

Day 2
9.20am
Ha! They do. They have all been complaining of awful hangovers. Its karma. Hurrah!
I thought breakfast was 7.30-8.30 but turned out it was an hour later as it is a Sunday. Got up for 8. Hmmm. Annoying. I could have lain in for another hour. When I woke up the tent was soo hot. There is a clear sky and everyone has shorts and hats on. I think its going to be a nice day. I have everything now packed and ready to leave for 5.

11.30
Break. Is soo hot. I went and changed. Everyone is out with hats and shorts and small tshirts (well guys with no tshirts)  and suncream. Also with bottles of water (but that could be for the hangovers).
I am now excavating the layer I planned yesterday after having levelled it which was good fun.

13.15
After excavating my layer I had to context it. Rather than using a traditional context card we are being encouraged to use a digipen. You use it like a pen and the pen send the information to a database and what you write on the notepad is a backup hard copy incase of technical malfunctions. Its really interesting to see the technical advances that take place in archaeology so quickly.

6pm
On my way home now. After contexting my layer I got to use the pickaxce to take it all off. I was really bad at it. My supervisor put me to shame. But it was all good fun though. I have found nothing else but I had an amazing time. And Amanda said she would be happy for me to come back next year. Possibly for a week. I am soo glad I went. Apart from the fact that I got sunburned today. But it was a really worthwhile experience. And I would recommened it to others.

Reflection and forward planning / Thanks.

Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone involved really. I have really enjoyed being part of this project. The staff, past and present, have put so much in which has really shown. They have just done so much to make this time in Schome Park as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Also, thanks to all the Schomers I have come across really. You have all helped me too, some of you have been there for me wheh I was quite down, which was a great support to me. The only downside being I have never met any of you in RL!  ;)

The sessions have just stretched me and have helped my learning so much. I have loved having the freedom to be able to learn at my own pace with others there. The discussions have been well, fab, and I am really going to miss them.  :)

So, thanks to everybody, SParkers and Schomers alike, you have all made my time a happy one. So good luck to everyone and take care.

OK, really sorry. There will not be another session this week due to the fact I have my German Speaking Exam on Thursday. Most of my time (especially as of Tuesday) will be spent revising for it.

There will be another the week after though.

Really sorry.  :-\
