I'm interested.

I'm rather put off by writing a two word post, hence I've written this bit.  ;)

I am really keen - set a time and if I possibly can I will be there. My difficulty is that 2.30 - 8.00 is tricky - but set a time and I will try.

If these are likely to continue for a while, shall I speak to my auntie about this? Maybe she could get an account set up etc.

Oooh... that sounds good.

I was gonna do one to start off with and see how much popularity there is. If people want it to go on fr a while, then yes, by all means, if shes interested I can see her being very useful!  ;) lol

It might take a while for her to understand the concept and everything - if anyone has any wiki pages or anything that would be a good example to show her.

I was possibly going to set up a German wiki page. Unsure when Ill be able to, but I can have a go, can't promise it will be amazing though!  :P

I will send an email to her in a minute with a few links in it. Usually she is on msn on a Sunday but today she is not. I think we better get Peter's OK on this as he will need to check the CRB form or whatever it is.

Title: Re: German Session Mk 2

Was it you who said somewhere she is a teacher? If so she will already have the CRB thing.
Have aproblem- made a banner but I did it in paint.. and it saved as a .bmp

How can I change it?? :-\

And remember: If you're uploading it to SL, it needs to be a JPEG, TGA or something else that I can't remember. Otherwise, either a JPEG or a PNG tends to get you a good size (JPEGs are usually better than PNGs on file size, but PNGs save the image at full quality, while JPEGs don't)

Very nice, Vibia! (I wish I knew something about German so I could join in, but sadly, I don't  :()

KitKatKid, setting up a SParker account for Schome Park takes time and quite a lot of effort, but remember that your aunt (and anyone else who is interested) can start to contribute immediately by signing up to the forum and taking part in discussions.

Some of my colleaugues seem to have a lot of fun recording sound files of themselves speaking in a foreign language and uploading them to the web. I wonder whether we could do something similar, only add them to objects or something... you know, have something that will 'talk' to you in German perhaps?

Title: Re: German Session Mk 2
Post by: KitKatKid Schomer on February 17, 2008, 01:03:47 PM
Maybe we could learn to talk about our house, how many rooms there are etc.

I would be interested- I really need to keep up with German and French since dropping them after GCSE, and I need a reason to keep me coming in to Schome instead of being tempted by the admittedly fun distractions of the Orange Box and Halo...

That's easy :P

The main thing that confuses me when we're doing German is the numbers - for example, if we're told to go to page 82, which is zweiundachtzig (literally: two and eighty), I sometimes end up interpreting it as '28' by accident.

My husband has just got one of those teach yourself German cds to use in the car (all preparation for this lad coming to stay), I have a horrible suspicion it would be really against the rules to share it here. Copyright would be against it I imagine. Anyone know?

Yay!

I was rather pleased in my German coursework.. I kinda made up a word.. well ish!

Naturwissenshaftengebaeude!  lol (science block :D)

Well- there is now also the voice chat, so we can have a go at speaking.

This looks like its gonna be really good, I didn't think there would be this much interest!  8)

Unsure on what that is, something to do with meat and lables  ???
But this is my favourite German word:

Unterhaltungsmoeglichkeiten!

I use it quite a lot in all my work and coursework! Anywhere posible, i think my teacher must be getting fed up with it!  lol

Title: Re: German Session Mk 2
Post by: Decimus Schomer on February 17, 2008, 07:48:36 PM
But this is my favourite German word:

Unterhaltungsmoeglichkeiten!
What does it mean? :P

We've only done some basic stuff so far (ie, numbers up to 999999, cases, prepositions, houses (I keep trying to spell 'house' with an 'a' :P), where we live, countries, etc.)
Still, we're learning a lot more than we did in French in first year - apparently, by the end of this year, we'll have done the past (perfect, I think) tense in German, while in French we only did that in second year..,

Title: Re: German Session Mk 2
Post by: Miss. Vibia on February 17, 2008, 08:01:26 PM
it means entertainment opportunities...

Ooh... prepositions are: mit, nach, von, zu, aus, bei, zeit and gegenueber. I can remember them! Unsure on what the English ones are though!  :P

Hi Vibia!
Here is more interest in your German session, I'd love to take part.. :) I had German years ago in secondary school, but totally forgotten now :-[. I am involved in languages anyway and considering I have a German and an Austrian supervisor, learning some German would be great!

As I am a language teacher, I also tought I could help with the activites, if needed. I've added some topics on the wiki page, though there are lots of others.. It might also be good to see what people would like to learn / would find useful..  ::)

Btw - I really liked Amba's idea of talking 'things'! Think of a talking fridge or a wardrobe  lol If that would require a lot of programming/design, anything that talks (basic words/expressions/sentences/stories, etc.) would be great to improve listening/practicing even when one is alone.

Post by: Miss. Vibia on February 17, 2008, 08:07:08 PM
Wow! I am really pleased to see such interest in this... there wasn't that much last time I did it.. there were 4?? people there. I think...

I've always found learning a loanguage a really useful thing to have, going on holiday, it is very useful, rather than being one of the people who goes to places and speaks English, I personally think it looks better even if you only know a few words and phrases to get you by.

I like Unternehmungslustig and Vorsichtiget, especially because they are an antagonistic pair (if that is a proper phrase).

Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz
Something to do with working to eat beef politely? ???

: Vibia
prepositions are:

What about zwischen, vor, hinter, an, auf, bis, seit, unter, über and durch?

Um, interesting! :)

Vibia - we've only been taught ones that take the dative, which include 'neben' (which you haven't mentioned yet, either of you :P)

Fox - :D

Think of a talking fridge or a wardrobe  lol If that would require a lot of programming/design, anything that talks (basic words/expressions/sentences/stories, etc.) would be great to improve listening/practicing even when one is alone.
A proper chatbot is extremely difficult to do, but we could have, stuff like a bed that, when clicked, says, "Ich bin ein Bett", etc.

That's... impressive.

Still, I think the most confusing preposition I've heard of is 'in' in Latin. It means 'in' or 'on' when used with the ablative case and means 'into' or 'onto' when used with the accusative... Confusion!

Oh, long words & datives  :-\ German won't hurt, right?  :P

A proper chatbot is extremely difficult to do, but we could have, stuff like a bed that, when clicked, says, "Ich bin ein Bett", etc.
I had thought of more or less the easier way :) i.e. 'things' that play pre-recorded speech.. native speaker recordings would be very helpful, I suppose..

And probably 'things' that would allow recording as well.. As Amba suggested, it could be real fun to record ourselves! Would it also be possible to add a message box that folk could leave comments on each others' recordings (either text or voice)?  ::)

That'd help, but it'd cost a fair bit of money (L$10 = about 2.5p per upload)

Would it also be possible to add a message box that folk could leave comments on each others' recordings (either text or voice)?  ::)
Text: Yes. Voice: Only by doing the above.

But It may be worth it- then we could hear with the pronounciation, although using voice chat may be just as good... we can get people with good German accents, and Pigment has offered to help.

That's very true. I was just pointing out that, if we want to upload a *lot* of stuff, it could become expensive...

Anyway, one thing I've just remembered I was going to point out about German is how literal it can be. For example, a detached house is 'Einfamilienhaus' - literally, 'A one-family house'. Another example: a tram is 'Straßenbahn' (I know you can put either a 'ß' or 'ss', but I prefer the former), which is literally 'a street train'

And then there're accents, but they're much easier than in French - I only really started remembering where to put the accents in French this year, while in German I've found it much easier (I attribute that to the fact that we've only done one type of accent, as opposed to three or four in French :P)

Times are tricky for me because of my teaching this week but my group of students finish on March 11th and I should be more reliable from then. The easy way of finding out: a translator (http://babelfish.altavista.com/). Put in the words you don't know and (with a bit of interpretation) you should get a vague idea of what it means :P

And yes, it looks like it means 'I'm determined to try to be there'...

Not really; just remember that Electronics involves a fair bit of stuff about how electrical parts work. And programming. (ie, my brother's A-level project involved a three-page-of-A4 assembly program :P)

Anyway, back on the subject of German, one thing I like is the fact that everything's pronounced, as opposed to English where you have weird constructions like 'through' (the American, simpler, spelling is simply 'thru') or in French where you add bits to the ends of words depending on gender/number/etc. and then don't pronounce them :P

Title: Re: German Session Mk 2
Post by: Explo Schomer on March 05, 2008, 06:43:18 PM
The closest our school does to electronics is Systems and Control, which is notorious for the main project never being completed-unfortunately, we have to spend the entire time doing the same two year long coursework, which gets rather dull. There was a teacher who said that he'd run electronics every year, but never got round to setting it up, and he's suspended now, so SysTech is here to stay...

Yay!

The new person in my class seems to think Im a bit of a german freak as I know quite a bit! :p

Its quite funny actually- in German, sometime people have no idea what a load of the words are. There was one lesson where we were talking aboit holidays, hotels and shopping. Noone really knew any of the words, it was my hand which was always up. I think people got a bit annoyed by the end of the lesson! It was so funny though- That was the lesson when I realised that I actually knew *quite a bit* of German!  ;) lol

One of the things we had to learn was a sentence: "Ich nehme einen Hamburger mit Pommes" :P

Ours have to be in on Monday; I was going to hand it in today, but we forgot to fill it in yesterday :P

Triple (well quad) science
... 'quad science'? What? ???

Dec do you know about GCSEs in C, C++ etc?
It's called 'computing'. And it's an A-level course. GCSE IT is basically 'how to use M$ programs for those who don't already know and have nothing better to do with their lives' :P

Quad science. I get a GCSE in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Astronomy. My IT teacher said it was a seperate one. Anyway we dont do a GCSE in it we just do a key skills system if we get to leval 3 in it it is worth 20 UCAS point and is still valid to uni leval..

I'm still pleased at convincing a group of year 7s (probably year 9s now, come to think of it), that I was a German exchange student, simply by having a very bad German accent and using intermittent German when talking to them. :P

I can't remember having any discussion about our options, for either GCSE or A level-we were just given sheets and told to fill them in and give them back in a week later. A few people ended up deciding their fate through coin flips.  ;)

Edit: I've just gone and got the notecard. There're a couple of mistakes in it, but I suppose you're not going to get it perfect, are you? :P

Anyway, this one stood out:

Ich habe drei stunden Deutsch pro woche.
I have 3 French lessons per week.

Deutsch = German, not French :P
Franzözisch = French (why it's that long, I dunno. Then again, the other week we had to learn 'meine Liebslingsfussballmannschaft' at school :P)

Yes, I asked if we could have a languages sub-forum (not one for just German- that's just greedy!  lol )

Will sort out a notecard over this weekend and Monday. As we ahve just broken up from school I should have enough time.

But just for some warning there wont be one on the 15th April (week after next) due to the fact that I'm in London with my family, and at 7.15 I will be watching Lee Mead be Joseph!  ;) lol

May have something to do with the fact I go to a private school, so they don't have to conform to what the government says :P

Im going back on Tuesday, and am in one of the few counties that are going back then. Its annoying, when I was on holiday, most of the tourist type shops were closed, because not many people where on the easter break. But I still walked past the school and laughed.

Easter holidays tend to be set by schools themselves, or by LEAs- central government doesn't get a say. If they did, we might have holidays that were more similar across the UK. The main problem, though, is the ridiculous calculation to get the date of Easter each year. Why it can't just be fixed I don't know.

Ah, right.
(anyway, I was replying to Topper's comment that some counties are going to have standardised terms)

The main problem, though, is the ridiculous calculation to get the date of Easter each year. Why it can't just be fixed I don't know.
Indeed.
It's something crazy like 'the nearest Sunday to the nearest [some phase of the moon] to [some date]', because it was originally a pagan festival; Christianity just borrowed it and decided not to change the date (even though it's somewhat suspicious, considering the Christian version supposedly celebrates an event that happened on a specific day :P)

Title: Re: German Session Mk 2
Post by: Fox Phlox on April 05, 2008, 09:19:45 PM
It celebrates an event which happened at a particular phase of the moon. Passover - like most of the major Jewish festivals - is related to the moon.  Easter almost always follows Passover (this year is Jewish leap year so, unusually, Easter coincided with Purim, instead).

Title: Re: German Session Mk 2
Post by: Miss. Vibia on April 06, 2008, 01:38:16 PM
Yes, apparently it has to do with the moon phases, and eclipses, as there was an eclipse when Jesus was on the cross. Apparently there are a *lot* of calculations to sort out when Easter is!  :P

It claims it needs that, but it only really needs it on high settings.

Try zooming in on the avatars - if you go close by, it uses the detailed versions.
