: Teacher's TV filming in Schome Park on Monday 19th November at 7.30pm
: PeterT November 17, 2007, 07:54:06 AM
This is to alert you to the fact that we will have a film crew capturing what we are doing in Schome Park on Monday the 19th November from about 7.30pm (GMT) onwards. The camera will be following TheSchome Ranger around (they are filming the computer screen so will be able to see whatever I can see).

We hope to have a number of things going on for them to film. The list of things we would like to have looks something like this:

If you can be in-world on Monday from 7.30pm for about 90mins then sign up (http://schome.open.ac.uk/wikiworks/index.php/SPP_TV_filming_schedule_07-11-19) - it is essential that we know how many people are planning to be in-world so we can make sure that we don't make the island too laggy!

Please comment on the above plans - I'd like to have a clear schedule of what is going to happen between 7.30 and 9pm on Monday ... and definitely need to know who is going to be around during that time.

I think I might be at a push to get on - but I will see if I can. Would it be ok, (if I can get on!) if I logged off by 830?

I think the ideas you have are good - they seem to be some of the best bits of Schome Park.

I will try to get on but i will probably need to come off at 8.15 - 8.30 because my dad will need the computer when he comes home from work.

All the ideas are good!

When will the programme be shown on Teachers TV? I want to show my mum and dad :P

No problem about only being able to make part of the time - sign up (http://schome.open.ac.uk/wikiworks/index.php/SPP_TV_filming_schedule_07-11-19) and put the times you can make in brackets after your name
eg KitKatKid (7.30 to 8.15pm ish)

I am going to check - if I can make it, let us know how you want us personally to help out :)

We need someone to organise the regatta - looks like Topper and Achilles are out of action on Monday (though Topper may be back by then if all goes well with is grandad).

Also - if we are doing the physics thing - need to plan who is going to do what and when.
Ideally I'd like a kind of schedule of events -
eg

7.30 - general tour of the island
7.45 - parachute jumping from somewhere up high (would be good if we had a hoard of parachute jumpers - I don't even have a parachute)
8.00 - regatta - race around some course or other (with TheSchome Ranger either as a passenger in a boat or flying along above the racers - so we get some good shots of the event) - are we best using the inflatable powerboats?
8.20 - in the Sandbox with Yankee's club members and folk who are helping them develop their skills
etc

That is just an example - am hoping that Yankee's club members will join in in with parachute jumping and the regatta etc - cos will be more fun with more people.

So - wanting volunteers to offer to do specific things at times that suit them - then we can pull together a schedule - in reality we should probably aim to have things scheduled from 8pm to 9pm - cos the camera crew will take time to set up etc. I also want to show them the wiki and forum. They may want to have time to interview some folk in-world (using text chat - so if anyone wants to volunteer to be interviewed let me know ...)

I should be able to make it. Can we have maybe three people go round in a regatta motor boat. From my research on the SFF train it would be best for a track to be made then have a controllable carriage on physical that way the train will move consistanlty and be controlable.

I've now made a very basic SSF train-it moves about two metres per touch, through rezzing 50 blocks. I'm a bit concerned about scaling this up in case Linden Labs think it is griefing. So, instead, the train needs to look better, and we need to allow it to move in a direction other than straight along the x axis, so we need to get the rotation and convert the polar coordinates produced to a Cartesian coordinate. Of course, we can also look into ways to make it more efficient.
: Re: Teacher's TV filming in Schome Park on Monday 19th November at 7.30pm
: Decimus Schomer November 17, 2007, 05:36:40 PM
convert the polar coordinates produced to a Cartesian coordinate.
**Works out how to do that**

If we take a as the angle and d as the distance, then the following should work (taking 0o = North):

x = sin(a) * d
y = cos(a) * d

And, to convert back (by the way, 'atan2(x, y)' is the programming way of saying 'tan-1(x/y)', while 'hypot(x, y)' is 'the square root of x2+y2')

a = atan2(x, y)
d = hypot(x, y)

All these functions are in the LSL library (I believe), with their first letters capitalised and prefixed with 'll'.

**Wonders what the 3D equivalents of sin/cos/tan/etc. would be**

Thanks, Decimus, do you want to plug it into the script?-we only need 2D coordinates at the moment, as I suspect that the train would be unable to go up any hills anyway.

Incidentally, I think you have to use the same tools when working with 3D, just work it with one 2D plane and then another.

I can come on Monday. And if they do want interviews, then i would be willing to answer some questions. What about some sort of government meeting, or something like that? To show how far our community has developed, and how we now have our own system for dealing with problems etc, with minimal staff supervision.
Just an idea.

P.S. When will it be on? So i can tell my headmistress, who would love to watch it.[/color]

I think having a couple of folk explaining the governance structure would be useful - probably better than holding a governance meeting at this point - though if there are specific things you need to discuss for real within the governance group then by all means go for it. Part of my reaction here is about wanting activities that are going to be visually interesting on TV - so probably need more 'action' in the movement sense, than a meeting would provide (which why I haven't suggested and Ethics and Philosophy session for example).

I will definitely be showing the film crew the forum and the governance structure within that etc..

If you want to speak to people about the government structure, how it was set up etc, then maybe Trix and i could speak to you? We did spend alot of time talking to each other about it and trying to set it up, with loads of help from all the great people in the different departments  ;)

I'd of thought that its impossible to have a 3d sin/cos/tan becuase they are used in triangles (or formed triangles) even when dealing with diagonals in 3d you use a 2d triangle representation so I'd of thought there is none

Just to say I have created the teleport to the Parachute Jump platform. I had to create 2 other platforms as you can only teleport upwards 300m at a time.

The ground teleport is near the bridge over the river to get to scholympia (you can't miss it - its a yellow cube!)

You can use a different type of teleport that can take you anywhere up to 768m into the air, but it takes a while (40-45m/s being the typical speed)

Also, I know a way of getting people up to 4km into the air (but no lower :P) quite easily...

Terrific - question - how many more teens and adults can we take? Two reasons I ask...

1) I'm always meeting educators (mostly USA) who want a place to come into with their kids. Should I actively be promoting SPii this way? Any limitations/considerations at all?

2) I'm in charge of the ISTE's Second Life (http://iste.org/secondlife) speaker series. Peter and others from the project who are on the main grid could come and give a talk and get a HUGE response, I guarantee it.

How should I proceed?

Re 1 - we are happy to bring in new folk - so long as we are bringing in enough staff to cope with the number of students - and critically that we feel comfortable that they will fit in with what we are trying to do with schome ...
Of course there are limitations on numbers - but one of the things we want to do is test those limits - and we are a long way off at the moment.

Re 2 - I'm sure folk (myself included) would be happy to 'give a talk' on the Main Grid re schome and the Schome Park Project ...

Ok - I've included you on the schedule already - in the 8.30 and after slot along with Baso and Mars - but to be honest what I suggest we do is (a) I'll talk with folk in the Sandbox as they are working (eg old hands helping new folk with their builds etc in the sandbox) (b) then move to the Japanese pagoda - and have a discussion with Trix and Kali re governance and anyone else who then wants to join in about what they've been doing etc can do so.

Suspect we may be pushed to fit everything in - but better to have too much then not enough going on!

Tonight it will work best if folk get on with doing things and leave me to come up to you when I am ready.
There are a couple of exceptions to this - where I have specifically asked folk to come up and say Hi to me cos I want to be sure not to forget to include them (you know who you are if you are one of these people cos I have PMed you about it)

I will try to stick with the schedule as much as possible - though there is a huge amount to get through and it may be that the film crew want to focus on things that are not in the schedule - so apologies in advance if I don't get round to talking with you as planned.

Please be honest and open in your responses - constructive criticism is good - remembering not to criticise people (focus on events/actions) and that suggesting solutions is better than just flagging up problems. If you have thought about things you want to say and have them prepared in a word file or whatever then please cut and paste in short sections (as if you were talking) - max of one sentence at a time.

Other than that - have fun engaging with the activities.

If you say "pull" to the parachute it should open.

If you say "close" it should fold away.

Don't forget to wear it first.

I wasn't very happy with that. No offense but your interview skills aren't great..
I was also under the impression that we were going to get private interviews instead of a group of around 12 people and instant messages having a little 10 minute chat about the posibility of forum newsletters..

I'm learning Faz - sorry it didn't meet your expectations.

If you want to give me pointers for how to do it better next time I'm all ears (though of course I may not agree with you)  ;)

I found it quite hard to concentrate on the interviews because of the fact that so many people were there talking about things that were at times irrelevant - especially since Kali and I had already planned what to say and our answers got interspersed with conversation. However, I think that the discussion went well with a larger number of people because it gave us more ideas and viewpoints. I hope that it all went well (or as well as possible, with you crashing) at your end and the TV crew got some good footage.

Well I'm pretty sure nobody will be THAT concerned about how its not very easy to read everything in our forum, which seemed to be the main focus of the whole conversation. There were some interesting points by trix and kali but their rehearsed answers were getting drowned out by all the people who just turned up answering the questions themselves :(

If I may jump in...

First of all, hats off to Peter and everyone who made it in and contributed to the event. There's an expression that goes something like 50% of winning is just showing up. :) Without the crew of people who DID make it, there would not have been anything much to videotape. So I want to especially recognize those of my USA squad who were able to come.

That said, I too was under the impression that there would be individual interviews. I did my best (failing miserably) to arrange the USA kids in the sandbox; had we decided up front what areas we were to be working in, and communicated that in advance, it would have helped.

When Peter showed up and started asking questions in the sandbox, it was somewhat chaotic, to us, but I bet to the TV crew, it looked just fine. Also, as someone who has arranged meetings like this before, I can tell you that NOTHING ever goes as planned. Crashes, people not being where they are supposed to, people with questions, general confusion, it's all part of the experience! It's the nature of the beast.

When we joined everyone in the park, I had no idea it was a formal discussion; I just thought we were coming in for an chat. I think everyone from our side noticed the formality of the chat, and, accordingly, didn't say much - they honestly felt (the ones in the room with me) that they didn't want to interrupt. I personally don't mind diving in, and tried my best to contribute, and to draw out Darkwolf and others.

Some of our guys left to do other things, hope that was okay, again, I am happy they came at all!

I think they probably got PLENTY of GREAT footage and we are all generally obsessing about minutae that is nearly invisible to anyone but us!

Thank you Peter for arranging this and I can't wait for the segment! Thanks all for participating!

I know that things were not quite as planned - sorry about that.
Partly cos of my machine crashing and then not letting me back in I lost quite a lot of time - and I was keen to give more folk a chance to talk ... maybe not a great plan on my part - though actually I think the stuff about the forum was useful (not least cos it identified that the forum was used and was busy - but also cos I think that there are some real issues around how we manage the forum and how people cope with it ...)

Ho hum - the camera crew seemed to think they had lots of good material and were very happy.

They were particularly impressed by the discussion at the end about relationships between staff and students ... and I must say that is something I think we need to explore further ...  ???

Will let you know when I hear from them about when something might be being aired on TV - suspect that it could be a while - lots of editing to do!

Thank you to every for their input (including the staff who went out of world in order to reduce lag!)   :)

Must remember not to try a parachute jump with 20 people again - totally messed up my PC for about 15 minutes!  lol

Oh, I thought you meant to do that and was going to say congratulations Peter!

I decided not to be in-world (both the attendance and activity lists were looking pretty full), but I can see from the wiki page and forum posts that this must have been a wonderful evening! (system crashes etc aside!).

I was extremely impressed that you took the decision to welcome all and did not try to “stage manage” proceedings too closely. To me, this demonstrated true confidence and belief in what you are doing – creating a most fabulous, vibrant, welcoming and tolerant learning environment, as opposed to a “circus” in which the same predictable old avatars are called upon to say their set pieces.

It is my guess that a large chunk of the people who will see this broadcast will have already read about Schome in the press and are also very likely to have visited the website and possibly wiki and forum as well.

[Sometime in the late summer I met a local authority children’s services manager in SL who when asked whether she had heard of Schome said “Of course. [unprintable words], I can’t seem to open a [unprintable word] paper without seeing an article on Peter Twining and Schome”! I’m sure many people like her do not want to hear more of the same ]

It is great that you have moved forward in such a positive way since then, from celebrating the initial successes to now including the more uncertain elements of introducing newcomers successfully and considering scalability and extensibility of the system.

But was it all an accident? ???

...

No it wasn't an accident - I had originally intended to have more time talking with folk in the sandbox but this got curtailed cos of my machine crashing and then SL not letting me back  in - but as the schedule shows the intention was that lots of folk would join the discussions in the pagoda (though we ended up in the garden!).

I had intended to do some one on one interviews - but I was aware that (a) I wanted to include more folk - and particularly newer folk and (b) that discussion would be more interesting than one on one interviews. So I'd kind of hoped to start off with questions to Trix and Kali followed by wider discussion involving everyone ... which is kind of what happened.

I know Faz was upset that I interviewed him in an IM - this actually worked very well from the camera crew's point of view because it demonstrated how you could engage with several conversations at once (I was toggling back and forth between the main discussion and the IM with Faz).

For me last night did throw up lots of interesting (and one or two quite uncomfortable issues) - I was about to set up a discussion board in which we could reflect on SPii so far (cos I have to start writing the report for Becta in the next week or so) - so I think I will feed some of these issues into that discussion in order to provoke some discussion ...

What about those who did not get interviewed as well as those whose interviews were interrupted or perhaps did not go as smoothly as they had hoped adding their thoughts to a wiki page - something like "What I would have liked to have said"?

I was not in-world, and I know TV people edit things a lot. I'd love to hear what people would ideally have liked to have been asked and how they would have answered. What do you think?

I think that is a great idea ... Sounds to me like we have two areas of work and discussion to go forward.

One is the issues, such as useability of the forum, which came out of the discussion.

The second is how we manage interviews like that in the future. I did a course once on how to be interviewed on tv. It's faded in my mind now, but I remember there was lots of stuff which didn't seem very important to us which was very important to the tv crew. There's one colour of shirt you can't wear on tv, for example, and you shouldn't wear clothes with thin stripes, and you should think carefully about your background, and you should look at the camera, not the interviewer etc etc

Being interviewed in Second Life is a fairly new thing and we are discovering the rules as we go along. This might be something that our media and machinima strands could look at. I know on the web you can find videos that the BBC has made in Second Life - it might be worthwhile our looking at one or two of those and discussing what works and what doesn't.

Good points Fox,

Like Amba, I decided not to go inworld when I saw that we had enough people signed up and so missed out on what went on. When I held the young researcher's workshop we covered interviewing in SL through PM (personal messaging), with multiple chat and PM windows open at the same time. The focus was on the content which, at that time, was to elicit details about how Sparkers felt the environment was helping their development of knowledge age skills. I think that using PM as opposed to open chat makes it easier to conduct  one to one or one to several interviews. As pointed out in this thread, if you're using the main chat window then it is very likely that others will arrive and disrupt the flow without meaning to.

There is also the possibility that for interviewing purposes, the voice channel might prove useful. It's probably worth exploring provided we can devise some method of recording the results.

How about an Interviewing workshop, where we all bring our ideas and try them out? Peter can be the first guinea pig  :P

No offense but your interview skills aren't great..
To me, this is a comment which could be hurtful but which doesn't help us to move on.
Which problems with the interview did you identify? What went wrong that we can improve on next time?
If we identify the problems, we can work together on the solutions.
With a bit of work, by the time we make it on to the News at Ten, we'll be the world experts on in-world interviews.

It's a shame - it wasn't how I expected it either. Nobody I spoke to had seen you Peter (granted there were problems on all of our ends, what with lag and/or crashing) and no one had a clue as to what they were supposed to be doing. I have lots of pictures of the event - it wasn't very formal for me, it was more of a fun get together, lol.

There are things we need to address, and no doubt they'll be done.

Was fun though, got some awesome pics, and the parachute dive - well, words don't describe the sight of 15 people falling lol.

PS: I didn't get interviewed either :P

But it was shown - I spent ages following people around in boats and/or hitching a ride ...

So all was not lost  :)

Can you get the pictures put on on the SPii bliki (http://schome.open.ac.uk/wikiworks/index.php/SPii_Bliki)?

I didn't get to see anyone falling in the parachute jump - my computer totally froze - couldn't even exit from SL - then when eventually I managed to kill everything I couldn't log back into SL - eventually when I did get back in I was suspended in mid air for 10 minutes in my parachute (which I couldn't remove/detach/delete/return). Eventually used the Map to TP myself somewhere - and parachute shut (and I detached it).  Frustrating - but I guess showed some of the limitations of SL!  ::)

We did get good footage though - of people racing around in boats, of folk on the physics platform doing stuff with balances, in the sandbox (where we captured an incident that highlighted some issues we need to address re how the established folk treat newer folk! - more on that in a separate topic I suspect), talked with various people informally, then spent a while in the garden with a large crowd of people - lots of interesting discussion and two or three interviews of sorts (including via IM).

So whilst a bit chaotic and not according to plan (and some folk got left out) the film crew went away happy - and I learnt some things about how I would do things differently next time! (I'll jump off the parachute platform before everyone else!  ;) )
